From Dr. Laura
Dear Charity,
As spring arises and the plants start peeking out of the ground, we seem to be inspired to tinker around in the garden. I have dedicated this issue to bringing consciousness to the foods we eat. I am never one who tries to create fear around any subject; however, I am a strong supporter of knowledge so that each of us can then make a conscious choice. In this issue, I have brought awareness to Genetically Modified Foods. It is a highly charged subject that has brought a lot of controversy between environmentalists and the biotechnology field. I feel as a consumer, we have the right to know what a GM food is and therefore have the choice of consuming it or not. I hope you enjoy this issue and I look forward to your feedback. Happy Spring!

| Fixing vs. Healing
Our culture has taught us to ignore our symptoms, disconnect from our body or mask our symptoms with drugs. We have been taught to identify a symptom as the problem instead of looking at it as our body's means of communicating with us telling us that there is an underlying problem. To suppress a symptom only allows the original problem or defense pattern to lock in deeper or manifest somewhere else in the body.
To be truly healthy is to be connected to your body. This allows you to find the source of the disconnection, bring peace to the area, and allow the defense pattern to release. As you release these defense patterns in your body, you feel a sense of freedom and empowerment within.
The combination of Network Spinal Analysis, Somato-Respiratory Integration and coaching, help you to develop a new language within your neurology: we call it, creating new neural pathways. This new language will give you the tools to change the behavior that you have been repeating over and over which is actually causing and reinforcing the old defense patterns. As you free up these defense patterns, you will feel the freedom in your life and feel the true essence of who you really are.

What are GMO's?
A genetically modified organism (GMO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. It is a technique that can create any version of an organism that is desired by splicing DNA. Genetically modified foods are different from hybrid crops because through genetic engineering their genes are actually altered. In hybrid crops, farmers or scientists carefully breed one plant or species with another plant or species to get the absolute best qualities of both into the offspring.
The incentive to have GMO's is to create a plant that can be injected with antibiotics or vitamins to make the plant more nutritious or longer-lasting. They can make a crop resistant to herbicide so the entire plant and the weeds can be sprayed and only the weeds will die. There are plants that are frost and drought resistant so farmers do not lose their crops during adverse weather conditions.
It sounds scientifically impressive until you realize that scientists are going against the laws of nature. The concerns arise when we do not know the long term effects of consumption and the consequences that may happen when tampering with nature. There is no testing required for GM foods; so essentially, we currently are the guinea pigs. What we do know is that there has been an increase in food allergies; however, since there are no studies being performed we can not directly link the two.
Genetically modified foods did not exist prior to 1995. Now it has become a common process especially soybean, corn, canola, and cottonseed oil. You can almost guarantee that soy is genetically modified unless it is organic. The unfortunate thing is that approximately 75 percent of processed foods contain GM ingredients.
The latest controversy is about the consumer's right to know if there are GM ingredients being used in the foods they ingest. Currently there are no laws that require labeling of a GM food; it is however a hot topic with the new presidential election coming up.
|
Tips on Avoiding Genetically Modified Foods:
- Avoid Processed Foods. 75% of processed foods contain GM ingredients. If it is difficult to avoid processed foods, try organic processed foods.
- Read Produce and Food Labels. GM soybeans and corn make up the largest portion of genetically modified crops. When looking at a product label, if any ingredients such as corn flour and meal, dextrin, starch, soy sauce, margarine, and tofu (to name a few) are listed, there's a good chance it has come from GM corn or soy, unless it's listed as organic.
-
Buy Organic Produce. Buying organic is currently the best way to ensure that your food has not been genetically modified. By definition, food that is certified organic must be free from all GM organisms, produced without artificial pesticides and fertilizers and from an animal reared without the routine use of antibiotics, growth promoters or other drugs. Farmers Markets are a great way to buy organic and meet the farmers who are growing your food.
- Grow Your Own Garden. It is so rewarding to tend to your own garden. You get to plant exactly what you want and there is always an abundance of veggies and fruits to give to your friends. Everyone benefits!
- Look at Produce Stickers. Those little stickers on fruit and vegetables contain different PLU codes depending on whether the fruit was conventionally grown, organically grown or genetically modified. The PLU code for conventionally grown fruit consists of four numbers, organically grown fruit has five numbers prefaced by the number nine, and GM fruit has five numbers prefaced by the number eight.

Who is Monsanto? The Invasion of GMOs.
For millennia, farmers have saved seeds from season to season: they planted in the spring, harvested in the fall, then reclaimed and cleaned the seeds over the winter for re-planting the next spring. They simply followed the laws of nature. However, in 1980, the US Supreme Court made a decision that may forever change the way farmers harvest their seeds and the world's food supply, unless we take a stand. That Supreme Court decision allowed a patent to be placed on a living organism. Now something as natural as cross pollination has become a legal battle for farmers from Canada to Mexico and a nightmare for organic farmers. One of the companies who took advantage of this new patent law was Monsanto. Their scientists became the first to genetically modify (G.M.) a plant cell in 1982. Since then they are the world leader in genetic modification of seeds and have won 674 biotechnology patents, more than any other company.
Monsanto is well known for best-selling agricultural chemical product Roundup. In 1996 Monsanto began marketing genetically modified crops that were immune to Roundup. The crops, called "Roundup Ready" allow farmers to spray the herbicides in the fields, killing the weeds but not the crops. Monsanto then patented the seeds. They have also developed a seed called the "terminator" which only has one life cycle, so farmers are forced to purchase new seeds the next year.
We can also thank Monsanto for developing and patenting the wonderful recumbent bovine growth hormone, rBGH, which is an artificial growth hormone injected in cows to increase their milk production. Monsanto has continued to maintain that rBGH is completely safe, despite the fact that research has found the opposite to be true. Europe and Canada have banned it completely due to its health risks, as it has been found to increase the levels of cancer causing chemicals in the milk.
Monsanto is ravenously buying up conventional-seed companies. Monsanto is by far the leading producer of (GE) seeds, holding 70-100 percent of the market share for various crops. It is estimated that Monsanto seeds now account for 90 percent of the U.S. production of soybeans, which is a common product in processed foods in the U.S. Monsanto's acquisitions have made it the world's largest seed company with 2007 revenues at $8.563 billion. The one that provides the worlds seeds controls the worlds food supply.

Fighting Genetically Modified Foods
Signaling a turning point in the effort to halt the introduction of GMO crops in the U.S., In 2004 Mendocino County was the first county in the nation to approve a countywide measure that prohibits the "propagation, cultivation, raising and growing of genetically modified organisms."
The European Union (EU) has historically been against genetically modified (GMO) foods. Not surprisingly, multinational food giants were not happy when Europe banned GMO foods, especially considering that this country is a major producer of GMO crops. Unfortunately they launched legal challenges to force the EU to sell GMO seeds and crops in Europe, and they seem to be working.
Educate yourself. Buy with consciousness. Support the local farmers and food producers that care to produce high quality non-GMO products.
